Nigeria's 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, coinciding with the start of Ramadan and Christian Lent fasting periods, prompting concerns from religious and legal stakeholders. Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) official Daniel Atori stated that while Lent has never prevented Christians from voting historically, holding elections during Ramadan presents practical challenges for Muslim voters. Islamic cleric El Mu'azzam noted that fasting may reduce energy levels and engagement during polling, though he emphasized Islam does not prohibit voting during Ramadan. Legal practitioner Barrister Usman Yau countered that religion is not a legal ground to shift elections under Nigeria's Electoral Act 2022, as INEC has constitutional authority to fix dates without religious consideration. Concerns include potential voter turnout reduction, especially among fasting Muslims and election officials, and questions about inclusivity. INEC acknowledged the concerns but maintains the timetable complies with constitutional and legal requirements.
