22-year-old Nwaiwu thrilled with Super Eagles debut
Chibuike Nwaiwu made his Super Eagles debut in Friday's 2-1 victory over Iran in Antalya, Turkey. The 22-year-old Trabzonspor defender replaced Igoh Ogbuh in the second half after being called up as a late replacement for injured Calvin Bassey.
'It is a privilege for me to represent my country,' Nwaiwu told Super Eagles media. 'The dream of all footballers in the world is to represent their country, and I am very happy to make my debut today.'
The defender's debut comes as Nigeria continues preparations for their World Cup 2026 campaign. Nwaiwu becomes the latest young Nigerian defender to earn first international caps, following the emergence of players like Bassey and Ezri Konsa. Should Nigeria prioritize developing young defenders like Nwaiwu for future tournaments?
