Abuja court remands four IPOB suspects over DSS operative's killing, trial set for Oct 6
On Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja arraigned Michael Okafor (aka Onyechimeleze), Chinedu Joseph Chukw Joseph Chukwudozie (alias Kante), Chibunna Olisa, and Chigozie Olisa (aka Ability) on six-count charges including terrorism and kidnapping related to the death of DSS operative Ekpeyong Asuquo Owoh. The accused pleaded not guilty to allegations they conspired in terrorism, abducted Owoh while he traveled from Port Harcourt to Awka, held him hostage causing his death, and unlawfully possessed firearms including AK-47 and pump-action rifles.
Prosecution further alleges the defendants belong to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). DSS lawyer Munirat Oladunjoye requested a trial date after the not-guilty pleas, stating she has three witnesses for evidence. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted October 6 as the trial date and ordered the four suspects remanded in DSS custody pending proceedings. Defense lawyer Kelvin Ekwe represented them at arraignment.
The case stems from investigations into Owoh's killing and alleged IPOB/ESN activities. While the suspects deny involvement, the charges highlight ongoing security tensions between separatist groups and Nigerian security forces in the Southeast region. The remand means they will remain in DSS detention until their trial commences next week.
