Actor Tayo Faniran claims Nollywood success depends on rigging, not just talent
Nollywood actor Tayo Faniran said during a TVC eSplash interview on September 30, 2026 that success in the industry is not based solely on talent, claiming that some of the biggest producers are not the most talented. He argued that public perception differs from industry reality and believes his own career would have advanced further if opportunities were merit‑based, adding that there is ‘a lot of rigging’ in Nollywood.
His remarks highlight a long‑standing debate about meritocracy in Nigeria’s creative sector, where personal connections and politics often influence who gets funded or cast. For practitioners and aspiring actors, the statement raises questions about how to navigate an industry where talent alone may not guarantee advancement, and what systemic changes could create a fairer playing field.
If Nollywood’s biggest names are not necessarily its most skilled, what steps should emerging talent take to build sustainable careers—focus on skill development, seek mentorship, or advocate for clearer, transparent criteria in funding and casting decisions?
