ADC accuses Tinubu govt of democracy assault, cites attacks on opposition figures
The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has declared that what it calls a sustained assault on democracy by President Bola Tinubu's administration will fail, alleging coordinated intimidation, attacks, and financial inducements to weaken opposition parties ahead of 2027.
In a statement by Director of Media Kola Ologbondiyan, the council cited reported attacks on ADC leaders in Kaduna, the alleged assault on Sokoto governorship candidate Alhaji Munir Dan Iya by Sokoto Marshals along Airport Road, and the demolition of its campaign office in Kebbi State. It also claimed Labour Party candidate Peter Obi was denied a campaign venue in Enugu, and raised concerns over reported attacks on AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.
The ADC-PCC alleged that "millions of naira are being offered to weak individuals to mortgage their rights" but insisted "not all Nigerians are for sale." The council also condemned the continued detention of former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, ADC vice chairman, calling it unlawful.
"The world is watching," the statement said, vowing that ADC's political activities would continue despite the alleged suppression.
These allegations come as political positioning intensifies for the 2027 general elections. The specific claims — attacks, demolitions, venue denials, detentions — require independent verification. If substantiated, they signal a concerning pattern of opposition restriction. If exaggerated, they reflect rising political tensions.
What safeguards should exist to ensure opposition parties can campaign freely without state interference, and how will INEC and security agencies respond to these specific allegations?
