ADC challenges Tinubu’s claim on EFCC’s Osun account freeze, demands court order proof

On August 6, 2026, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) questioned President Bola Tinubu’s assertion that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) froze Osun State Government’s bank accounts based on a court order. In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC welcomed Tinubu’s subsequent order to EFCC to reverse the freeze but asked, “Which court order did you direct EFCC to vacate?” The party noted that the EFCC had never cited any court order while defending its action, instead claiming it acted under its legal powers and preventive mandate. The ADC said this suggests the President was either misinformed or deliberately misrepresenting facts, which it called “deeply disturbing.” It argued that Tinubu’s personal intervention contradicts claims of anti-corruption agency independence, stating that if the President can direct the EFCC to withdraw due to political consequences, he could similarly influence other operational matters. The ADC also found it unusual that the President issued a personally signed statement, questioning why he bypassed normal government channels. It contended the reversal resulted from widespread criticism by Nigerians, civil society groups and political parties, not a voluntary commitment to democratic values. Finally, the ADC urged Tinubu to direct the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to stop opposing the bail application of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, if he could intervene in the EFCC matter.
