ADC defies INEC, will hold congresses despite non-recognition
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) said it will proceed with its planned congresses and national convention despite the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) refusal to recognize its current leadership. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi told Arise Television on Thursday that the party gave INEC the required 21-day notice, which the commission acknowledged, and will continue regardless of INEC's position.
INEC recently removed David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its portal as ADC National Chairman and Secretary and stated it won't recognize Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is pursuing court recognition as national chairman. Abdullahi warned this reflects a broader pattern to ensure the 2027 general election is a "fait accompli" with no genuine choice for Nigerians, comparing it to past democratic erosion.
This standoff highlights growing tensions between Nigeria's electoral commission and opposition parties ahead of 2027. With ADC vowing to hold internal elections despite INEC's non-recognition, the party risks being excluded from the ballot if INEC maintains its stance. Party members face uncertainty about which faction to follow and whether their participation will count. The clash raises fundamental questions about INEC's independence and whether Nigeria's political space is narrowing.
As electoral standoffs intensify, what strategic response best protects opposition voices: strengthening internal processes, forming pre-election coalitions, or demanding institutional accountability?
