ADC Demands INEC Clarify Alleged Voter Revalidation Plan
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) immediately confirm or deny reports of a planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise. In a statement on Wednesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the party received reports of a leaked memo suggesting INEC may require already registered voters to revalidate their details less than a year before the next general elections.
The party warns this would be a "recipe for chaos" that could severely disrupt the electoral process. Abdullahi argues that forcing millions of Nigerians to repeat part of the registration process so close to elections would discourage participation, effectively asking them "not to bother at all." The ADC also raises practical concerns about citizens unable to travel to designated centres within a narrow window, questioning if they would lose their voting rights.
With voter apathy already a major challenge, ADC states any new barrier to participation will further suppress turnout and damage election credibility. The party cautions that confusion from such an exercise could favour the ruling party, urging INEC to avoid actions that create perceptions of bias. ADC criticizes that such a major policy is reportedly being discussed through a leaked memo days before a proposed start, demanding transparency over ambiguity. The party urges INEC to abandon the plan and recommit to a credible, inclusive process, stating: "Nigeria’s democracy cannot afford avoidable disruptions. The right to vote must not be subjected to last-minute administrative experiments."
