ADC Demands Tinubu Govt Explain N17.5tn Energy Security Spend
On July 21, 2026, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) called on President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), and the National Assembly to publicly account for N17.5 trillion reportedly spent on energy security in 2024. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said NNPC’s audited accounts showed N7.13 trillion under 'Energy Security' for the year, rising to about N17.5 trillion when other fuel-related costs and receivables are included. He noted that the figure dwarfs the N48 billion pipeline surveillance contract debated just a few years ago and questioned what Nigeria has to show for the spending.
The party linked the contracts to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd., a firm tied to former Niger Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), who has become a visible supporter of Tinubu's re-election campaign. ADC argues that with Nigerians facing rising food prices, transport costs, electricity tariffs and unemployment, the public deserves to know how much has been spent on pipeline surveillance since Tinubu took office in May 2023, who received the contracts, what results were achieved, and whether any independent value-for-money assessment was done.
ADC urged Tinubu, NNPC's management and board, and the relevant National Assembly committees to publish full details of all energy security and pipeline surveillance contracts awarded since May 2023.
