ADC members protest as Supreme Court returns leadership dispute to Federal High Court
Members of the David Mark-led National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress staged a protest at the Federal High Court in Abuja today, June 8, 2026, urging the judiciary not to allow itself to be used to stifle opposition parties in Nigeria. The demonstration comes amid an ongoing legal battle between the David Mark faction and the Nafiu Bala faction for control of the party. Protesters alleged that the lawsuit filed by Bala, which the Supreme Court referred back to the Federal High Court, is a ploy to distract the opposition political party. In April, the Supreme Court set aside a Court of Appeal order directing the parties to maintain the status quo, a decision upon which INEC acted in de-recognizing the David Mark leadership. With the case now back at the Federal High Court for 'expeditious hearing,' the future of the ADC's leadership structure and electoral participation remains uncertain as the 2027 elections approach. How will this intra-party conflict affect the ADC's ability to present a unified opposition platform?
