The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify. ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, made the claim during a Saturday interview with The Sun, saying INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan is caught between preserving the commission's independence and yielding to political pressure from the APC. Abdullahi expressed sympathy for Amupitan personally but stressed that the issue concerns the institution of INEC, not any individual. He warned that history will judge whether Amupitan chooses to be remembered with honour or ignominy, urging him to align INEC's loyalty with the Nigerian Constitution and the people.

The allegation matters because perceived compromises to INEC's neutrality could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls, erode public trust in election outcomes, and affect the legitimacy of the next government. Citizens should monitor INEC's actions, especially regarding voter registration and election preparations, and demand transparency to safeguard the democratic process.
