ADF Escalates Attacks in Eastern DRC Despite Military Successes
The Islamic State-aligned Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) is intensifying attacks in eastern DRC, killing at least 67 civilians in March alone across multiple attacks. The ADF generates significant revenue through ransom demands—abducting 544 civilians in March alone with ransoms of $2,500-$10,000 per person. This lucrative conflict economy, combined with forced recruitment through marriage and indoctrination, has strengthened rather than weakened the group.
Security experts warn that purely military approaches have backfired, pushing the ADF to disperse and adopt mobile tactics. With Nigeria having peacekeeping troops in the region, the situation highlights how regional conflicts can escalate despite military intervention.
