AFCON 2025: Mikel names four Nigerian stars impressing him in Morocco
Former Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel has named four Nigerian players who have impressed him at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Nigeria topped their group with 12 goals, the highest tally in the tournament. Mikel praised Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, saying both attackers are 'completely on fire.' Osimhen scored a brace against Mozambique and is now three goals shy of Rashidi Yekini's 28-year-old record as Nigeria's all-time top scorer. Mikel also lauded Alex Iwobi for finally showing his best form. 'I've been looking forward to this from Alex Iwobi for a long time,' he said. 'Everything is flowing through him, making good chances, and delivering those passes.' The former captain also tipped Wilfred Ndidi, the current team captain, for keeping the squad balanced. Nigeria's next match is a quarterfinal clash with Algeria this Saturday, January 10, 2026. The winner faces either South Africa or DR Congo in the semi-finals.
