AfDB raises $2.5B in oversubscribed bond; Nigeria's $6.2B portfolio under review
The African Development Bank priced a $2.5 billion three-year global bond on October 21, 2026, after investor orders hit $4.8 billion—nearly double the offer. The bond carries a 4.875% fixed coupon, matures January 18, 2030, and was priced at 28 basis points above SOFR mid-swaps, two points tighter than initial guidance. Settlement is November 2. This is AfDB's third dollar benchmark this year, following a $1 billion 10-year in January and $2 billion five-year in February, plus a £1 billion sterling bond.
Fitch affirmed AfDB's AAA rating with Stable Outlook in June 2025. The strong demand signals investor confidence in Africa's premier development finance institution, which matters because AfDB backs critical infrastructure and social projects across the continent.
For Nigeria specifically, the Bank and Federal Government have agreed to review the country's $6.2 billion project portfolio to identify bottlenecks, accelerate delivery, and align with Tinubu administration priorities. Implementation challenges have slowed several AfDB-backed initiatives; this review aims to fix that.
With AfDB's funding capacity confirmed and Nigeria's portfolio under active review, the key question becomes whether this translates to faster project execution on the ground—roads, power, agriculture programs that directly affect livelihoods. Will the portfolio review unblock stalled projects, or just produce another diagnostic report?
