African startup funding hits $2.49B in first nine months 2026, Nigeria leads
African startups raised $2.49 billion across 315 disclosed deals in the first nine months of 2026, up 7.8% year-on-year from $2.30 billion in the same period of 2025. Q3 alone accounted for $1.025 billion across 167 deals, driven by larger growth rounds in energy, fintech and clean tech. Nigeria remained Africa’s top destination, attracting $624 million, followed by Egypt ($396M) and Benin ($345M). Notable deals include Odyssey Energy Solutions (Nigeria) securing $74 million in combined capital ($47M debt + $27M equity) and Bluecore Energy (Ghana) closing a $50M seed round backed by Tesla, Uber and Amazon. Meanwhile, African fund managers raised $3.08 billion in new LP commitments between Q1 and Q3 2026, with major closes such as Ninety One’s Africa Credit Opportunities Fund 3 at $404 million and Airnergize Capital’s $239 million Clean Energy Fund.
This rebound signals renewed investor confidence and a shift toward bigger, later-stage deals and alternative financing like venture debt. For Nigerian founders, it means more capital is available but expectations are higher: startups must demonstrate strong unit economics, be open to venture debt structures, and target sectors such as energy infrastructure, mobility and digital payments. Investors should watch for opportunities in these high‑growth areas, while professionals seeking Japa or local opportunities can consider roles in funded startups or fund management firms expanding across West Africa.

Naija to the world! It’s always great seeing Nigeria consistently lead the continent in tech investments. $624 million in just nine months shows that despite our local economic challenges, the world still sees massive potential in our innovators. The fact that the focus is shifting to energy and clean tech is also huge solving our power issues while raising capital is a win - win.
