African Union condemns Israel’s appointment of Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland, announced on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Israel had recognised the breakaway region of Somalia last December, ending over three decades of diplomatic isolation for Somaliland. Lotem, formerly Israel’s ambassador to Kenya, now heads the new diplomatic mission.

The AU says the move disregards Somalia’s territorial integrity and risks undermining regional stability. In a statement on Sunday, the Commission expressed deep concern, reiterated its unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and warned that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland is null and void under the AU Constitutive Act and international law.

While Israel frames the alliance as part of the Abraham Accords spirit, the AU’s rebuke highlights the continent’s commitment to Somalia’s unity. Should Nigeria and other African states respond with diplomatic pressure on Israel, reinforce support for Somalia’s federal government, or pursue quiet diplomacy to prevent escalation?
