Africa's startup funding dropped sharply in January 2026, falling 49.27% from December's $349.1 million to $177.1 million across 28 deals. Deal volume also declined 62.67% from 75 to 28 transactions. The top 10 startups secured $163.8 million, representing 92.49% of total funding. Nigeria's ValU led with $63.6 million, followed by Egypt's MAX at $24 million. This concentration reflects investors favoring proven startups over new ventures, despite Nigeria's Tuteria raising $2.6 million in education tech. The sector shows reduced activity but sustained focus on established players.
