Gary Chomse, Vertiv's Regional Director for Central and Southern Africa, told Nairametrics that AI's rapid growth is making power, cooling and compute inseparable parts of a single ecosystem. He explained that AI workloads demand far higher power densities and cause rapid energy fluctuations, so traditional siloed approaches to data centre design no longer work. In Nigeria, where power reliability remains a challenge, organisations must build resilient, energy-efficient architectures that integrate modern power management, advanced cooling—including liquid cooling—and redundancy from the start. Chomse also pointed to the Central Bank of Nigeria's rule requiring payment transaction data to be stored locally by 2027, which will drive investment in sovereign data centres and edge infrastructure. To prepare, firms should assess whether existing facilities can support higher power densities, upgrade energy efficiency strategies, and identify where modernisation is needed. They must also factor in evolving data-sovereignty rules when planning capacity. Ultimately, businesses that treat power, cooling and compute as a coordinated system today will be better placed to scale AI initiatives efficiently and meet tomorrow's demands.
