AI study shows 10 minutes reduces independent thinking by 20%
New research from Carnegie Mellon University, Oxford, MIT, and UCLA reveals that just 10 minutes of AI assistance can significantly impair independent thinking. Participants who used AI for math problems solved them 20% slower when the AI was unexpectedly removed, and were twice as likely to skip questions. The same pattern emerged in reading comprehension. The study found most participants asked AI for direct answers rather than using it as a thinking aid, causing their problem-solving ability to disappear when the AI wasn't available.
