AI will create 170M jobs but displace 92M by 2030—Nigerian youth need technical AND human skills to compete
According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, AI is projected to create roughly 170 million jobs globally between 2025 and 2030 while displacing approximately 92 million existing roles. For Nigeria, where 3.5 million young people enter the labor market annually with a median age of just 18, this presents both opportunity and challenge. A university degree or single technical skill is no longer sufficient for long-term employability in this rapidly evolving landscape.
Research from McKinsey, PwC, and the World Bank reveals that future success depends on combining two skill categories: Core Skills (technical competencies in high-growth fields) and Human Skills (capabilities machines struggle to replicate). Core Skills in demand include Big Data Specialists, FinTech Engineers, AI and Machine Learning Specialists, Software Developers, and Security Management Specialists—driven by Nigeria’s booming fintech sector and digital transformation across industries.
Equally critical are Human Skills: Analytical and Critical Thinking, Creativity and Innovation, Communication and Interpersonal Skills, Leadership and Teamwork, and Agility and Adaptability. As AI handles routine tasks, employers increasingly value workers who can interpret data, innovate solutions, collaborate effectively, lead initiatives, and adapt to constant change. The most employable young Nigerians will be those who develop both technical expertise in areas like AI/fintech AND strengthen these distinctly human capabilities.
With 3.5 million Nigerians joining the job market each year, will you focus your upskilling on technical domains like AI and fintech, invest in human skills like critical thinking and leadership, or strategically combine both to future-proof your career in an AI-driven economy?
