AIICO Insurance delivered strong nine-month earnings through September 2026, with pre-tax profit surging 27.3% to ₦19.42 billion on the back of 14.7% insurance revenue growth to ₦114.57 billion and a 32.8% jump in investment income to ₦58.80 billion. Gross written premium rose 6.6% to ₦163.58 billion, though insurance service expenses climbed faster at 22.3% to ₦81.17 billion, pressuring underwriting margins.

The balance sheet expanded 21.3% to ₦708.39 billion in total assets, with financial assets now representing 80.5% of the book at ₦570 billion. However, cash reserves dropped 27.1% to ₦54.20 billion despite higher reported earnings, while insurance contract liabilities grew to ₦412.09 billion.

Despite the fundamental improvement, the market reacted negatively—shares fell 6.58% to ₦3.55 on October 30, extending a 15.1% monthly decline and 6.33% year-to-date loss. Trading volume jumped to 17.09 million shares from 2.87 million, suggesting institutional repositioning. Market capitalisation stands at ₦129.95 billion, implying a price-to-book of roughly 1.15x against shareholders’ funds of ₦112.55 billion.

With earnings per share at 47 kobo (up from 37 kobo) and the stock trading at a discount to book value, the disconnect between fundamentals and price warrants scrutiny. Is the market pricing in concerns about expense ratios, foreign exchange losses (₦2.02B), or the sustainability of investment income—or is this a value opportunity?
