Airtel Africa targets $7.4B revenue from data growth, not new subscribers, as Nigeria drives recovery
Airtel Africa reported $1.85 billion revenue for Q1 FY27 (ended June 2026), up 30.95% yearly. Annualized, this puts them on track for $7.4 billion revenue—above their $6.42 billion FY26 total. Growth now comes from existing customers spending more on data and financial services, not new subscriber adds. Data overtook voice as Airtel's top revenue source in FY26, generating $750 million in the quarter with average data revenue per user up 20.83% to $2.90. Smartphone penetration reached 51% of users, driving average monthly data consumption to 10.6GB per user (up from 7.8GB). Airtel Money processed $245 billion annualized transaction value across 56.5 million users, growing 51.5% yearly. Nigeria's recovery is pivotal: after naira devaluation hurt earnings in 2024, Nigerian revenue grew 52.92% in FY26 and another 50% in Q1 FY27, turning Africa's largest telecom market from volatility into growth. However, smartphone affordability remains critical—Nigeria's smartphone cost is 26% of monthly GDP per capita (vs 16% LMIC average), and component prices may push prices up 15-30% this year. If smartphones become less affordable, Airtel must push existing 87.3 million smartphone users to consume more digital services rather than rely on new buyers. Airtel Money's Nigerian adoption lags (just 1.24% of revenue) against East Africa's 73.5%, facing stiff competition from OPay and Moniepoint. Will you monitor smartphone price trends in your area, or expect Airtel to push you toward more data/financial services on your current device?
