Airtel Africa has chosen London as the preferred venue to list its mobile money arm, Airtel Money, seeking to raise between $1 billion and $2 billion at a $10 billion valuation. The telecom group said the London Stock Exchange offers deep institutional capital and would let it unlock value not reflected in its combined telecom‑fintech valuation. Airtel Money serves 56.5 million customers across Africa, processes about $245 billion in annualised transaction value and generated $404 million in quarterly revenue – roughly 22% of Airtel Africa’s total earnings.

The move comes as London’s IPO market struggles: in 2024 only 18 listings raised £777 million, and even a 2025 rebound relied on a few large deals. Analysts question whether London can absorb a multi‑billion‑dollar African fintech offering when investors have shifted to New York, Asia or the Middle East. However, Airtel Africa already lists in London, so a spin‑off would avoid introducing a wholly new issuer and could benefit from existing investor familiarity.

For Nigerians who use Airtel Money for payments, savings or merchant services, a successful IPO could mean more capital for product upgrades, wider agent networks or lower transaction costs. Conversely, a lukewarm reception might delay such improvements.

If Airtel Money secures the sought‑after valuation, would you expect better services or lower fees for your mobile‑money wallet, or would you consider looking at international investment opportunities linked to the float?
