Akpabio urges security to intensify rescue of Nigerians in captivity as Senate resumes
Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue Nigerians still held in captivity and protect vulnerable communities, speaking as senators resumed plenary after more than two months of recess on Tuesday.
Akpabio stressed that Nigeria cannot consider itself completely free while any Nigerian remains in captivity, declaring 'So long as a single Nigerian languishes in captivity, a part of Nigeria is held captive; and this Chamber cannot call itself free of the burden.' He called for renewed vigour in rescue operations and pledged the Senate would use legislation, appropriation and oversight to determine what more could be done to end attacks on communities.
Ahead of the next electoral cycle, Akpabio urged politicians to pursue ambitions without turning communities, religious groups or regions against one another. He underscored that candidates should be allowed to present their programmes and answer difficult questions freely, while citizens must be able to make their choices without violence or intimidation, stating 'No electoral prize is worth a Nigerian life. No victory deserves celebration if it leaves the nation wounded.'
The Senate President charged lawmakers to maintain decorum and continue legislative responsibilities despite political activities, noting that senators from different parties, regions and backgrounds must disagree where necessary but with dignity and respect for national unity. Akpabio assured that the Senate would remain at its post and continue legislative duties until mandate end, even as political campaigns commence.
