On Democracy Day, June 12, 2026, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called on Nigerians to uphold unity, vigilance, and active citizen participation as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. Speaking through a message signed by his media adviser, he praised citizens’ resilience despite past low points and warned against elements seeking to derail democracy.

Akpabio stressed that democracy must go beyond elections to include accountability, justice, compassion, and service to the common good. He urged the youth to abandon the sidelines and engage in politics, noting they are the fulcrum of future leadership. On insecurity, he appealed for national unity and cooperation with the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, expressing confidence that the government remains committed to ending terrorism and securing the release of captives.

He acknowledged that mistakes have been made in the democratic journey but expressed confidence that with public support Nigeria will reach its desired destination. The Senate President’s address serves as both a celebration of democratic endurance and a rallying point for civic action amid ongoing security challenges.
