Alonso names Moi and Levi as Chelsea captains while James out till 2027
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has named midfielder Moi and defender Levi as the players who will wear the captain’s armband while Reece James recovers from knee surgery that will keep him out until 2027. Alonso announced the decision after the club confirmed James's surgery earlier on Friday, explaining that both Moi and Levi have the support of the squad and can lead the team even without the armband.
This matters to Chelsea supporters and Nigerian fans who follow the Premier League because leadership stability influences team performance, especially during a long-term absence of a key defender like James. Knowing who will step up helps fans gauge how the team might cope defensively and in the dressing room over the next year.
Alonso emphasized that leadership exists with or without the armband, and that the group of captains will pull the team together both on matchdays and during the week. Fans should watch how Moi and Levi handle the responsibility in upcoming fixtures, and consider whether the shared captaincy approach affects Chelsea’s consistency in league and cup competitions.
