Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress presidential running mate and former Minister of Transportation, told AIT that he technically resigned from President Muhammadu Buhari’s government by attending the office only once a week—on Wednesdays—to pursue further studies, with Buhari’s consent. He said he informed the president, applied for leave, and specified he would not be in the office Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.

This disclosure sheds light on how a senior minister could retain title and salary while markedly reducing daily duties, raising questions about accountability and the effectiveness of ministerial oversight in Buhari’s administration. Amaechi held the Transport portfolio from November 2015 until his formal resignation in May 2022, when he left to contest the All Progressives Congress presidential primary. His recent framing of the earlier period as a “technical resignation” suggests a gap between official role and actual presence.

For citizens, the revelation prompts reflection on what constitutes meaningful public service: Should officials be obliged to disclose substantial reductions in work hours, and how might such arrangements impact policy delivery and public trust? As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, understanding these dynamics may help voters assess candidates’ commitments to governance.
