Amazon's Project Kuiper has secured a seven-year landing permit from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to operate satellite internet services in Nigeria starting 2026. The permit, dated February 28, 2026, authorises Kuiper to operate its constellation of up to 3,236 satellites and introduces direct competition to Starlink, which has dominated Nigeria's low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite market with over 66,000 subscribers.

The approval covers three service categories: Fixed Satellite Service for homes and enterprises, Mobile Satellite Service for emergency communications and maritime safety, and Earth Stations at Sea for aircraft, ships, and vehicles. Operating in the Ka-band frequency range (27.5-30.0 GHz uplink, 17.7-20.2 GHz downlink), Kuiper targets higher data capacity and lower latency than traditional satellite systems. The 100 MHz bandwidth allocation supports Amazon's standard customer terminal, designed to deliver speeds up to 400 Mbps.

Nigeria represents a prime market with over 23 million people in unserved or underserved areas and mobile broadband penetration at 50.58% as of November 2025. The entry signals Nigeria's shift from a Starlink monopoly to a contested LEO battleground, potentially driving down prices and improving service quality.

With Amazon's scale, AWS integration, and logistics muscle, competition could accelerate service rollouts and force incumbents to raise performance standards. For enterprises, this means better options for telecom backhaul, remote operations, and cloud connectivity. For consumers, the prospect of more choice and competitive pricing.

Will you consider satellite broadband alternatives when Kuiper launches, or stick with current options like Starlink, fibre, or mobile data?
