Amazon Leo partners South Africa's Herotel for 2027 satellite internet launch
Amazon Leo, the e-commerce giant's satellite Internet service, will launch in South Africa in 2027 through a partnership with Herotel, a local fibre network operator being acquired by Vumatel. Instead of seeking its own telecoms license, Amazon is leveraging Herotel's existing Electronic Communications Network Service (ECNS) license to navigate South Africa's requirement that operators have at least 30% ownership by historically disadvantaged groups. Amazon will supply satellites while Herotel handles regulation, customer support, and local operations. The service, called Evry, promises residential speeds of up to 400Mbps and 1Gbps for business customers. This partnership strategy offers a blueprint for satellite operators entering South African markets without restructuring ownership, though competition for licensed partners remains limited.
