Ambassador-designate Mohammed Lele dies in Turkey ahead of Algeria posting

Nigeria's ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, died on April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, after a prolonged illness. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his passing in a statement issued April 22, noting Lele had been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and cleared by the Senate for the Algeria post. Born in 1976 in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, he studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and entered the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001. Over his career, Lele served in Nigerian missions in Berlin, Germany; Lome, Togo; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was described as dedicated, meticulous, and exemplary, with intellectual depth and commitment to advancing Nigeria's foreign policy. His remains were received at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on April 21 and he was buried on April 22, 2026, in Kano State according to Islamic rites. The Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, said Lele will be sorely missed by the ministry and the Foreign Service community.
