APC blasts ADC leadership crisis on self-inflicted legal errors

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a sharp rebuttal to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing the opposition party of creating its own crisis through unlawful maneuvers. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka and National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru stated the ADC's predicament stems from its own failure to properly manage internal leadership disputes.

The APC's response counters ADC's earlier claims that President Bola Tinubu is deliberately weakening opposition parties to establish a one-party state ahead of the 2027 elections. Specifically, the APC denies that Tinubu or the ruling party was involved in ADC's court case. Instead, APC argues ADC's faction, led by former Senate President David Mark, rushed to the Court of Appeal while a related case was still pending at the Federal High Court—a procedural error the appellate court itself noted.

According to APC, the Court of Appeal found ADC's appeal was "built on a faulty premise" because the lower court had not granted an injunction but merely ordered ADC to "show cause" why one should not be granted. APC contends ADC improperly appealed an order that was never granted and simultaneously challenged jurisdiction at both the High Court and appellate level, constituting an abuse of process. This legal misstep, APC says, is why INEC correctly refused to recognize either ADC faction's leadership pending the conclusion of the Federal High Court suit.

The ADC has insisted it will proceed with scheduled congresses and a national convention despite the Court of Appeal's directive to maintain the status quo. APC maintains this defiance further demonstrates ADC's lack of seriousness. The escalating dispute raises concerns about political stability and the readiness of opposition parties for the 2027 elections, as internal conflicts weaken their collective ability to present a viable alternative to voters.
