APC chieftain faults ADC's Atiku pick, says zoning breach threatens unity
APC chieftain Osita Okechukwu criticized Atiku Abubakar's emergence as ADC presidential candidate, claiming it elevates personal ambition over Nigeria's zoning convention. Okechukwu argued that since the Fourth Republic, rotational presidency has guaranteed national cohesion, fairness, and sense of belonging among Nigerians. He questioned why ADC would disregard this principle when major parties like APC, PDP, LP, and NDC all subscribe to rotational presidency in the national interest. The former VON Director General warned that ADC's action could return Nigeria to divisive North-versus-South politics similar to what led to Rotimi Amechi rejecting a vice presidency offer. With Nigeria facing insurgency, Okechukwu noted that most northern politicians are waiting until 2031 for the North's turn under rotational understanding. He expressed hope ADC won't blame APC when Nigerians vote against their 'unforced error,' noting that PDP's 2023 zoning breach caused deep internal divisions that persist. History will ultimately judge ADC leaders by their adherence to this 'zoning glue' that contributes to national unity, he concluded.
