The APC on Thursday dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claims that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat, calling them alarmist and ironic. Through Lagos State spokesman Seye Oladejo, the ruling party accused the ADC coalition of being 'afraid of their own shadows' and seeking relevance through doomsday prophecies.

Oladejo argued that democratic institutions have functioned normally since May 29, 2023, with elections conducted, courts adjudicating disputes, and citizens exercising constitutional freedoms. He maintained that opposition parties can speak, protest, and litigate freely—hardly signs of a democracy under siege.

The APC attributed Atiku’s claims to internal ADC contradictions and 'unchecked ambition,' describing the coalition as fragile and doomed to fail. According to Oladejo, the ADC sees upcoming elections as its 'last chance,' making leaders desperate to blame the ruling party for their fading relevance.

Is this about defending democracy or the final convulsion of a political arrangement held together by fear and impatience? Nigerians have moved on, and democracy remains resilient despite opposition prophecies.
