APC says Wike free to join party, denies appointments tied to membership
APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda stated Wednesday night that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is free to join the party, emphasizing that membership remains voluntary. 'If he wants to join the APC, he is free to do so. We don't compel people to join APC,' Yilwatda said during a media chat.
The APC chairman dismissed claims political appointments under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu require party membership, noting critics have been appointed to government positions. 'People that insulted Mr President, he appointed them. They are in our government,' he said, adding 'Those that insulted him, he welcomed them in broad daylight.'
Wike, a prominent politician whose party affiliations have been subject to speculation, currently serves as FCT Minister. His potential move to APC could signal significant realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, with the party already positioning itself as inclusive of former critics.
