APC urges opposition to own internal disputes, stop blaming ruling party
APC National Secretary Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru told opposition parties on Wednesday to stop blaming the ruling party for their internal disputes, insisting that political parties must take responsibility for how they manage their affairs. Speaking during a media chat, Basiru dismissed claims that the APC influences or frustrates opposition activities, saying there is no evidence the ruling party is behind the crises affecting other parties.
He argued that most opposition conflicts stem from internal disagreements and failure to follow due process, not external interference. Basiru cited examples where parties proceed with conventions despite court orders, which he said violates the law, and warned that ignoring court rulings while conducting parallel leadership processes undermines party discipline and democratic institutions. He emphasized that the APC operates within the law and respects the judiciary and other democratic bodies.
For Nigeria’s democracy, functional opposition parties are essential for accountability; when they blame external forces instead of fixing internal problems, governance suffers and voters lose credible alternatives. Opposition groups should review their internal processes, ensure they comply with court decisions, and resolve disputes through lawful channels. Citizens, meanwhile, can assess parties based on their respect for due process and institutional integrity.
