APC's 31 governors, 13m members won't guarantee 2027 win – Turaki
Political analyst Abubakar Turaki argued on S24 TV Monday that APC's control of 31 state governors and nearly 13 million members doesn't automatically translate to victory in the 2027 general election. Speaking while analysing the political atmosphere and the "On Your Mandate We Shall Stand" chanting during President Tinubu's budget presentation, Turaki said the President could have simply asked supporters to stop if uncomfortable.
He cited former President Goodluck Jonathan's 2015 defeat despite backing from 20-24 governors, as documented in Jonathan's books. Turaki also referenced Senator Ali Ndume's warning about politicians "wearing the APC cap in the morning but working against the party in the evening," suggesting internal sabotage. Videos showing vote-counting difficulties across parties further raised questions about internal democratic processes.
The analysis matters because it challenges the assumption that structural advantages—governors, membership numbers, incumbency—determine electoral outcomes. Nigeria's 2015 precedent shows governing party machinery can collapse under voter dissatisfaction. Ndume's allegation of dual loyalty within APC ranks signals potential fracture lines. Questionable internal party processes could weaken candidate legitimacy before the general election.
For voters, the intelligence is clear: 2027 will be a genuine contest, not a coronation. Watch how APC manages internal contradictions between now and primaries. Monitor whether opposition parties can coalesce around credible alternatives. The election will likely hinge on economic performance, security outcomes, and candidate quality—not just party structure.
