Gospel artist Asu Ekiye, known as the "Prince of the Niger Delta," confirmed that his wife Kunemofa initiated their divorce after 28 years of marriage, countering assumptions that he ended the relationship. In a Facebook statement, he said she packed out of their home and filed for divorce without prior quarrels, despite his repeated attempts over the past year to save the marriage. The couple married in 1998 and have four children together.
Ekiye emphasized he holds no bitterness toward his former wife, describing their separation as a mutual acceptance of reality after exhaustive reconciliation efforts. He portrayed Kunemofa as a remarkable woman who embodied the qualities he sought in a partner—beautiful, spiritual, intelligent, nurturing, enterprising, and resourceful—adding she had been his true companion throughout their marriage.
This clarification follows Premium Times' Thursday report of their separation and aligns with Ekiye's earlier revelation that they married quickly after meeting, with him proposing on the street and her taking two weeks to accept. While the divorce marks the end of a high-profile union in Nigeria's gospel music scene, Ekiye stressed the parting remains respectful and dignified for all involved, particularly their children.
