Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has appointed Senator Augustine Okwudiri Akobundu as Director-General of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections. The council will be chaired by Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai serving as Deputy Chairman.

This appointment signals the ADC’s effort to build a structured, experienced campaign team early, bringing together military, political, and economic expertise to coordinate nationwide operations. It highlights the party’s strategy to leverage figures like veteran journalist Dele Momodu (Media and Communications Directorate), former senator Dino Melaye (national outreach and mobilisation), economist Mohammed Hayatudeen and former CBN deputy governor Kingsley Moghalu (policy structure), and pioneer APC chairman John Oyegun (Campaign Advisory Council) to strengthen its electoral machinery.

The campaign structure includes six directorates each led by a Deputy Director-General, with thirty directors assigned to specific responsibilities. Akobundu’s background as a retired Colonel, former Minister of State for Defence, and current senator for Abia Central is expected to inject discipline and coordination into the effort. For voters, this shows the ADC is organizing ahead of time; for observers, it reveals the opposition’s attempt to present a unified front.

With this lineup, will the ADC’s early organization translate into electoral success, or will internal dynamics hinder its 2027 bid?
