Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused President Bola Tinubu of failing to remember his own teachers or classmates, arguing this disconnect prevents understanding of teachers' worsening economic hardship. Speaking through ADC spokesperson Phrank Shaibu on Monday, Atiku said leaders who can't recall their educators struggle to grasp teachers' rising costs for food, transport, rent and electricity amid stagnant incomes.

Atiku shared how he still remembers his early teachers in Jada who supported him after losing his parents at a young age, describing teachers as "architects of every nation's future." He criticized the government for praising teachers only on Teachers' Day while leaving them to face year-round hardship, stating "a commemorative message cannot pay a teacher's bills." The former VP, who founded the American University of Nigeria, said his education background gives him insight into teachers' dedication and sacrifices.

Atiku apologized to Nigerian teachers on behalf of leadership that failed to prioritize their welfare, pledging that an ADC administration would focus on reducing living costs, creating decent jobs and improving educator welfare if elected. He urged current leadership to match Teachers' Day appreciation with concrete policies ensuring dignified living conditions for teachers nationwide.

Does a leader's personal connection to education shape their policy priorities—and should Nigerians expect more than ceremonial recognition for teachers' year-round sacrifices?
