Atiku dares Tinubu: Investigate me over $16bn power scandal now
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to investigate and prosecute him if they possess evidence linking him to any wrongdoing in the controversial $16 billion power sector expenditure. Speaking through his aide Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the allegations keep resurfacing decades after he left office, despite successive governments having had ample time to produce proof. He noted that the National Assembly previously examined the power projects but never invited him to respond, stressing that as Vice President he chaired the National Council on Privatisation but did not oversee implementation—responsibility fell to the relevant minister. The same applies to the Aluminium Smelter matter. Atiku declared he remains ready to face investigation and prosecution if credible evidence emerges, urging the government to either present a case and prosecute him or stop what he calls manufactured distractions. He also linked the renewed allegations to growing demands for accountability over the funds saved from the removal of petrol subsidy, asking bluntly: "So, our question remains brutally simple: where is the people’s money?" Atiku accused the administration of applying a double standard by removing relief for poor Nigerians while defending incentives for powerful economic interests, and dismissed social media attacks as ineffective in silencing his calls for transparency and improved purchasing power.
