Atiku Abubakar has appointed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as Deputy Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections, announced on September 24, 2026. El-Rufai remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over an ongoing corruption investigation and also faces a separate case filed by the Department of State Services regarding alleged interception of communications involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

In the campaign structure, El-Rufai will report to Chairman Kashim Ibrahim-Imam and handle high-level political coordination and stakeholder engagement nationwide. Senator Augustine Okwudiri Akobundu serves as Director-General and Campaign Manager. The appointment underscores ADC's strategy to mobilize influential northern political figures despite their legal challenges, signaling the party's intent to contest strongly in the 2027 polls.

What does this mean for voters and the political landscape? Will El-Rufai's detention hinder or bolster ADC's credibility, and how might it influence alliances and voter perception ahead of the election?
