Atiku Abubakar dismissed the federal government's proposed 30-day petrol discount at NNPC retail stations as an election-driven measure offering only temporary relief, stating Nigerians aren't fools to accept one month of discounted fuel after years of punishing prices. Speaking through ADC spokesperson Phrank Shaibu in a statement issued yesterday, Atiku questioned what happens on Day 31 when prices return to previous levels, arguing the government manufactures one-month relief while hardship persists.

The former vice president criticized the restriction to NNPC stations without disclosed savings per litre, noting commercial transport operators may not pass savings to passengers. He contrasted this with his long-standing proposal for capped production support on locally refined petroleum products, calling the govt's temporary intervention a "volte-face" that proves his plan is workable. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced the discount prioritizes public transport operators and insists it's selling at cost, not restoring the subsidy removed in May 2023.

Atiku insisted Nigerians need lasting relief, not a countdown to renewed hardship, declaring "Tinubu made life expensive. I will make life affordable again." The policy's effectiveness remains uncertain without specifics on discount amount per litre or mechanism to ensure savings reach consumers. With 2027 elections approaching, this debate highlights competing visions for addressing Nigeria's persistent petrol pricing crisis.

Will temporary election-year discounts provide genuine relief or merely postpone the inevitable return to high petrol prices that affect transport costs, food prices, and household budgets nationwide?
