Atiku slams Tinubu's 'slow response' to South Africa xenophobia
Former VP Atiku Abubakar condemned what he called the Tinubu administration's 'characteristically sluggish and underwhelming response' to renewed xenophobic tensions in South Africa. In a statement by spokesperson Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described it as 'embarrassing and unacceptable' that Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, was 'shamed into action' while smaller Ghana immediately evacuated over 300 distressed citizens.
Atiku noted Ghana demonstrated 'urgency and leadership' by approving immediate evacuation, while Nigeria appeared 'hesitant, reactive, and devoid of the decisive urgency expected of a nation with Nigeria's diplomatic stature.' He urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to abandon its 'habitual slow-footedness' and show the urgency Nigerians deserve when lives and national dignity are at stake.
The Daily Post reports Nigerians have become major targets of xenophobic attacks in South Africa. While the Nigerian government has announced evacuation plans, Atiku questioned why it took 'external pressure and the decisive action of others before Nigeria found its voice.' He called for robust travel advisories, efficient evacuation arrangements, intensified diplomatic engagement, and rallying the African Union against recurring xenophobic violence.
