Atiku vows to restore fuel subsidy if elected Nigeria's president in 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar pledged to reinstate the fuel subsidy if he wins Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, arguing that President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the subsidy in May 2023 has produced no benefit for Nigerians. In a social‑media interview, Atiku said, “I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?” He added, “If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money.”

The subsidy removal sparked sharp increases in the price of fuel, transportation and basic goods, squeezing household budgets nationwide. Atiku’s promise directly addresses a key pain point for voters still feeling the impact of higher costs, and it sets up a clear contrast with Tinubu’s stance that the saved funds have been redirected to state allocations and infrastructure projects.

Although Atiku previously endorsed the subsidy’s removal, he now frames its reversal as a test of leadership. Voters must decide whether to trust his pledge to bring back the subsidy and recover alleged stolen funds, or to believe the current administration’s claim that the money is already being used for development. The issue will likely shape campaign debates ahead of the 2027 election.
