AU's Peace Council Fails Africa's Security Needs

African Union Heads of State declared the continent in a "vile grip of insecurity" at February 2026 summit but took no emergency action. The AU's Peace and Security Council (PSC) is structurally flawed, with members like Morocco (involved in regional conflicts) and Somalia (a failed state) undermining its effectiveness. Morocco's occupation of Western Sahara and Somalia's instability weaken the council's ability to resolve continental conflicts. The AU also fails to enforce decisions, as seen in South Sudan where coup leader Salva Kiir remains unaccountable despite AU peace plans. Israel's recognition of Somaliland and UAE's claims on African territories further expose the AU's impotence. Africa's voice remains muted globally, with Nigeria's AU Central Bank seat seen as a distraction from systemic failures.
