Austrian court sentences man who plotted Taylor Swift jihad attack
An Austrian court on Thursday sentenced 21-year-old Beran A. for plotting a jihadist attack on Taylor Swift's Vienna concert that was thwarted in summer 2024. The three Vienna dates of Swift's record-breaking "Eras" tour were cancelled after authorities uncovered the Islamic State plot. Beran A., arrested the day before the cancelled concerts, pleaded guilty to terror charges but denied being an accomplice to attempted murder.
He faces up to 20 years in prison (or up to 10 years if acquitted of the murder charge). Beran A. formed a terror cell with co-defendant Arda K. and a third Austrian, Hasan E., imprisoned in Saudi Arabia. He admitted he believed he "had to wage jihad" but was "afraid to die." The plot, targeting Ernst Happel Stadium during Swift's concert, was foiled with help from US intelligence. Beran A. detailed how he attempted to make a bomb and sought weapons advice from IS members.
The case highlights ongoing international terrorism threats and how they impact large public events. Last year, a Berlin court convicted a Syrian teenager of contributing to the same plot, giving him an 18-month suspended sentence. This incident demonstrates the importance of international intelligence cooperation in preventing attacks on high-profile cultural events.
