AVEVA deepens Nigeria expansion with focus on industrial AI scaling and local talent partnerships
AVEVA is strengthening its Nigeria presence as part of a focused Africa strategy targeting six key countries, citing Nigeria's youthful population, oil and gas expertise, and government digital initiatives like NIN as strategic advantages. The company currently has 15 staff in Nigeria with more leadership coming, and is investing through three main channels: strengthening technology partner relationships with training and event access, partnering with universities to provide students hands-on industrial software experience in laboratories, and co-investing with customers on pilot projects to ensure successful adoption. Khaled Salah, AVEVA's Vice President for Africa, emphasized that Africa requires localized approaches—not importing global templates—stating "Africa should be Africa for Africa" by adapting technology and operations to local realities through Nigerian partners. He identified the scalability gap as Nigeria's biggest challenge: many organizations remain stuck at the AI pilot phase (e.g., improving one pump's efficiency) without scaling successes across entire operations, where real value emerges. Salah defined industrial AI as systems that not only detect problems (like outages or inefficiencies) but also recommend specific physical-world actions (such as changing oil or adjusting operations), stressing that human oversight remains critical at decision points. This focus on bridging academic theory with industrial practice and moving from isolated pilots to organization-wide AI scaling presents clear opportunities for Nigerian professionals seeking relevant skills and businesses aiming to transform operations through context-aware technology.
