Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, told Trust TV on Friday, October 2, 2026 that the African Democratic Congress presidential primary was manipulated to favor Atiku Abubakar. He said votes cast for other aspirants, notably Hayatu-Deen, were swapped during collation and credited to Atiku, prompting his exit from the party.

The allegation raises concerns about the integrity of internal party processes ahead of the 2027 general elections. As a former SGF, Lawal’s claim carries weight and could affect public trust in the ADC’s ability to conduct fair primaries. It also highlights accusations of elite manipulation in candidate selection, a recurring issue in Nigerian politics.

Lawal said he protested the alleged vote swapping but was told the party could not risk disgracing Atiku, described as its leader, and his objections were overruled. The ADC has not publicly responded to the claim. Voters should consider how party primaries are conducted and demand greater transparency when evaluating candidates for office.
