Bandits have escalated their attacks across Nigeria, now wielding rocket launchers in addition to rifles. On October 2, the Sokoto State Police Command recovered at least two rocket launchers and other dangerous weapons from bandits who attacked Tsabre Village in Isa Local Government Area. The assailants continue to kill and kidnap residents, particularly in the North-West and North-Central regions.

This surge in firepower is fueled by massive ransom payments. An SBM intelligence report shows that between July 2025 and June 2026, at least ₦7.78 billion was paid in ransom for 7,825 kidnappings, while ₦22.856 billion was demanded. Recently, parents of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted in Imo State said they paid ₦6 million each to secure their children’s release. Between August and October 2026, no fewer than 36 serving or prospective corps members were abducted in separate attacks, leading many to avoid wearing their khaki uniforms for fear of being targeted.

Security experts trace the weapons to porous borders, corrupt officials, and even military personnel selling arms. A repentant arms dealer confessed that soldiers escorted his convoys smuggling over 450 rifles and 8,000 rounds from Niger Republic. They also point to illegal gold mining sponsors who profit from insecurity. Experts insist the fight against banditry must start at the top, addressing official complicity and illicit supply chains. Will authorities crack down on these networks and protect citizens, or will the insecurity continue to grow?
