Bank of Ghana warns against rejecting cedi coins; offenders face jail or fine

The Bank of Ghana warned on July 22, 2026 that refusing to accept cedi coins, including the 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 pesewa and GH¢1, GH¢2 denominations, is illegal, as all coins remain legal tender under the Currency Act, 1964. Offenders face up to three years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, and can be arrested without a warrant. The BoG will work with the Ghana Police Service to investigate complaints, which the public can report to the nearest BoG office, police, or official channels.

For Nigerians, this matters when traveling to Ghana for business, trade, or tourism: rejecting cedi coins could lead to arrest or fines. Although Nigeria's coins (1 kobo to N2) are rarely used and largely disappeared from daily transactions, the CBN has also reaffirmed that all N100 notes, both the centenary commemorative and standard versions, remain legal tender nationwide, urging acceptance without discrimination.
